A large part of our work for the next 9 months will be the planning of our new programme period of 2011-2014. Below, missionaries and local church and project leaders have gathered together for a workshop in Dar es Salaam to brainstorm over ideas for the new programme period.

Iso osa meidän seuraavan 9 kuukauden työurakkaamme tulee olemaan uuden ohjelmakauden 2011-2014 suunnittelua. Yllä, lähettejä yhdessä paikallisten kirkon ja projektien johtajia kanssa aivoriihipalaverissa Dar es Salaamissa ideoimassa tulevaa ohjelmakautta.

Fida has worked in Mwanza for decades. Much of the work has been among the children. Currently, Fida is involved with running a sponsorship programme for orphans and a project aiming at developing the quality of life for children in the communities though modern social childrens’ ministry. One discovery that was made during the baseline study of the project was that the children lacked facilities where to spend their free-time. This, combined with a donation of a large plot on the shore of Lake Victoria, convinced the project to build a free-time camping site for children and youth. The site is awesome, starting from the sandy beach and climing up onto the massive rocks on the hillside. The plan is to have a football pitch, beach volleyball and a basketball court, alond with a hall on the hillside for larger gatherings.

Fida on tehnyt työtä Mwanzassa jo useamman vuosikymmenen ajan. Paljon työstä on suuntautunut lasten pariin. Tällä hetkellä Fida on mukana pyörittämässä orpolapsille suunnattua kummiohjelmaa ja projektia, joka tähtää yhteisöjen lasten elämänlaadun parantamiseen modernin sosiaalisen lapsityön myötä. Projektin suunnitteluvaiheessa ilmeni, että Mwanzan lapsilta puuttuu tiloja, joissa turvallisesti ja rakentavasti viettää vapaa-aikaansa. Tämän, ja kirkolle lahjoitetun ison järvenranta tontin innoittamana, projekti päätti lähteä rakentamaan lapsille ja nuorille suunnattua vapaa-ajan leirintäkeskusta Victorian järven rannalla. Puitteet ovat mahtavat. Tontti alkaa rantahiekasta ja nousee korkealle kukkulalle kiven järkäleiden joukkoon. Tarkoituksena on rakentaa jalkapallo-, koripallo- ja beach volley kentät ja iso kokoontumissali kukkulan rinteelle.

The local church members are actively taking part in the construction of the camp-site. Daily, dozens of church members gather at the site to hack and break down the rocks to be used as more suitable building materials.

Paikalliset seurakuntalaiset ovat aktiivisesti mukana leirintäalueen rakennusurakassa. Päivittäin tusinoittain seurakuntalaisia tuli työmaalle hakkaamaan ja pilkkomaan isoja kiven lohkareita pienemmiksi paremmin rakennusmateriaaliksi sopiviksi palasiksi.

Ihan sama kuinka monta kertaa sellaisen on nähnyt aikaisemmin, leijonan löytäminen on aina yhtä jännittävää. Tämä kaveri oli vartioimassa juuri tappamaansa puhvelin ruhoa.

Last week, Daniel left for a one-week field trip. First to Tanga by plane, via Zanzibar and Pemba, then to Mwanza by car, via Moshi, Arusha, Karatu, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, and then back for to Dar es Salaam by plane. Here are a few photos along the way. Below, local coffee sold at a small airport in Dar es Salaam.

Daniel lähti viime viikolla viikon kenttämatkalle. Ensin hän lensi Tangaan Sansibarin ja Pemban kautta, sitten jatkoi autolla Mwanzaan Moshin, Arushan, Karatun, Ngorongoron ja Serengetin kautta, ja lopuksi taas lentokoneella kotiin Dar es Salaamin. Tässä vähän kuvasatoa siitä reissusta. Yllä paikallista kahvia myynnissä pienellä lentokentällä Dar es Salaamissa.

In Moshi, there is a cute and cozy little restaurant called Salzburg Steakhouse. It is difficult to find, on the far end of a rough side road in the centre of the city and doesn’t seem to fit in at all with the worn down and rusted old buildings around it, but serves wonderful dishes and has a very nice atmosphere to it. Who ever designed the interior knew how to recycle well. Quite a few Volkswagen parts were used in it.

Moshissa Daniel kävi lounaalla kivassa viehättävässä pienessä ravintolassa nimeltään Salzburg Steakhouse. Ravintola on vaikea löytää, koska sijaitsee keskussa pienen monttuisen sivutien päässä eikä ollenkaan istu paikalliseen ympäristöön likaisten, vanhojen ja ruosteisten tönöjen keskellä, mutta tarjoilee maittavia aterioita ja tunnelmallisen ilmapiirin. Paikan sisustaja on osannut kierrätyksen jalon taidon. Ainakin aika paljon vanhoja volkkareiden osia oli käytetty sisustaessa.

Tämä tyylikäs auto oli parkkeerattu ravintolan eteen. En yhtään ihmettelisi, jos auto kuuluu itse sisustajalle.

This photo is one of Daniel’s all time favorites. We have probably posted it on our blog before, but it’s worthy of another post. The photo was taken while on safari with the Pitskun Poppoo in 2008. If you look carefully, you can see Jan and Julia in the back of the car. The events that took place when we tried to pass these two elefants are a story of their own.
