There are two ways the locals arrange a pension for themselves. One way is scraping up enough money to buy a plot and build an own house. That way, if they survive past working age, at least they remain with a roof on top of their heads. And if they don’t, the house will continue to serve their offspring. The process of building a house can take a very long time. Below are a few photos of the house of our programme Logisitics Officer during the construction phase. Him and his family were able to move into the house at the beginning of this year. It took him seven years all together to build the house. Since the weather in Dar es Salaam is hot and locals can rarely afford A/Cs, they come up with their own solutions for cooling the houses down. In the photo below, you can see that even the inside walls have windows on them for the wind to move through the house.
