We thought Benjamin had Chicken Pox last summer (check a post from June 2007 to verify), but we were wrong. We thought he had it easy, but we were wrong. Dots all over, lots of itching and scratching, and plenty of sleepless hours and crying for the whole family. Poor boy. He is not happy at all at all the “dudus” (bugs) that keep biting him. At least thats how he sees it. We tried to explain Chicken Pox to him, but he seems to prefer his version of the dudu bites.

Me luulimme, että Benjamin oli jo sairastanut vesirokon viime kesänä (katso postaus kesäkuulta 2007), mutta me olimme väärässä. Me luulimme, että hän pääsi aika helpolla vesirokon kanssa, mutta me olimme väärässä. Näppylöitä ihan kaikkialla, paljon kutinaa ja raapimista ja roppakaupalla unettomia tunteja ja itkua koko perheelle. Poika raukka. Hän ei ole ollenkaan iloinen niistä “duduista” (ötökät), jotka jatkuvasti häntä purevat. Näin hän asian näkee. Yritimme selittää hänelle vesirokosta, mtta hän tuntuu nauttivat omasta näkemyksestään enemmän.

Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania (FPCT) is the partner church of Fida in Tanzania. It has approximately 600 churches around the country and 350,000 members. Their head office is located on the southern side of Dar es Salaam, in the district of Kurasini. Daniel usually visits the office about once per week, when visiting the programmes accountant, pre-school programme coordinator, administrator and projects coordinator, etc. Without much traffic the drive down to the office can take about 20 minutes, but if we hit rush hour, the “drive” can easily take over three hours. It’s Africa!

Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania (FPCT) on Fida yhteistyökumppanikirkko Tansaniassa. Kirkolla on noin 600 seurakuntaa ympäri maata ja 350,000 jäsentä. Heidän päätoimistonsa sijaitsee Darin eteläpuolella, Kurasini nimisellä alueella. Daniel käy yleensä noin kerran viikossa toimistolla tapaamassa ohjelmien kirjanpitäjää, esikouluohjelman koordinaattoria, hallintojohtajaa ja projektien koordinaattoria, tms. Ilman suurempia ruuhkia matkan meiltä päätoimistolla ajaa noin 20 minuutissa, mutta jos oikein pahimpaa ruuhkaa-aikaa päättää tehdä reissun, matkaan voi helposti mennä yli kolme tuntia. Vain Afrikassa!

Usually the first thing that happens when we visit HQ is “chai”, tea-time. Everyday at 10 am the head office staff sit together for tea, and since we usually don’t leave to the head office until around 9 am (to avoid the three hours of traffic), we are just in time for a second breakfast. Yleensä ensimmäinen asia mitä saamme tehdä toimistolle saavuttuamme on nauttia “chai-” eli teehetki. Joka päivä klo 10 aamulla toimiston väki istuu yhdessä teelle. Ja koska me emme yleensä lähde toimistolle kuin vasta klo 9 jälkeen (välttääksemme kolmen tunnin ruuhkat), saavumme aina juuri sopivasti toiselle aamupalalle. This week, we were able to sign the projects agreements to extension the two programmes we are involved in (Empowering Church for Youth Ministry and Pre-school Support Programme) to last until 2010.

Täällä viikolla allekirjoitimme uudet projektisopimukset, joilla ohjelmia joissa olemme tällä hetkellä mukana (nuorisotyön ja esikoulutyön tukiohjelmat) jatkuvat vuoteen 2010 asti.

We had a development cooperation seminar in Tanga this past weekend. All the Fida missionaries working with development projects got together to discuss work-realted issues and spend a little quality time among one another. Below, Sirkku and Daniella streching out during the meetings.

Olimme viikonloppuna Tangassa Fida projektityössä oleville läheteille järjestetyssä kehitysyhteistyöseminaarissa. Yllä, SIrkku ja Daniella venyttelevät palaverin aikana.

Benjamin was entertaining Enni and Verkku Villika during the tidious parts of the seminar.

After and during the meetings, Benjy got the opportunity to spend time with his two good friends, Sara and Rosa. Here they are all watching kid’s programs.

Seminaarin aikana ja sen jälkeen Benjamin sai mahdollisuuden viettää aikaa hänen hyvien ystäviensä kanssa, Saran ja Rosan. Tässä he kaikki katsovat lasten ohjelmia DVD:ltä.

Jani Salokangas, a new missionary in Tanga, got the opportunity to practice his baby-carrying skills. Together with his wife Laura, they are expecting their first child, who is expected to be born in May.

Uusi lähetti Tangassa, Jani Salokangas, sai harjoitella vauvankantoa seminaarin aikana. Yhdessä vaimonsa Lauran kanssa he odottavat esikoistaan, jonka on määrä syntyä toukokuussa.

Benjy just loves playing the guitar(s). Last night, he actually fell asleep with his wooden guitar (kindly prepared by Kyösti Murtonen) still wrapped around his neck. He played it to the very moment he fell asleep.

Benjy rakastaa kitaralla soittamista. Viime yönä hän nukahti puinen lelukitara (jonka Murtosen Kyösti niin kauniista hänelle rakensi) vielä kaulan ympärillä. Hän soitti kitaraa siihen asti kunnes silmät sulkeutuivat ja unet alkoivat.
