No matter how far into the bush you go, places were the children have never in seen white people before and where only mud-huts and dry landexists, you can always find 0.33L glass bottles of cold Coca-Cola at the standard rate of 18 cents (€) a bottle + deposit. However, the drink is such a desired commodity that when a truck packed to the max with soda bottles fell on its side in the city of Mwanza, the locals herded the truck by the hundreds in order to get their hands on an undamaged Coca-Cola bottle. The fact that there must of been thousands of shattered bottles and glass everywhere, didn’t seem to bother the people much.

Ei väliä kuinka puskaan menet, paikkoihin joissa lapset eivät ole koskaan nähneet valkonaamoja ja jotka koostuvat vain savimajoista ja aavikosta, löydät aina kylmiä 0.33L lasisia Coca-Cola pulloja 0.18 sentin (+ palalutuspullo) normihintaan. Coca-cola on kuitenkin sen verran haluttua kulutustavaraa, että kun täyttä limukuormaa kuljettaja kuorma-auto kaatui kyljelleen Mwanzan kaupungissa, sadat paikalliset piirittivät kuorma-auton siinä toivossa, että löytäisivät edes yhden ehjän Coca-Cola pullon. Se, että onnettomuuspaikalla oli varmasti tuhansia rikkinäisiä limupulloja ja lasin sirpaleita pilvin pimein ei tuntunut menoa hidastavan.

The lions are so used to people that they won’t bother to wake up from their afternoon naps even if you drive your car right up to them. This photo was taken by Aki Keskinen in Ngorongoro Crater in the summer of 2006. At first we thought the lion was dead and he was going to jump out of the car to take a closer picture. Luckily, just before did that, Daniel noticed the lion breathing.

Leijonat ovat niin tottuneita ihmiseen, että ne eivät anna päiväuniensa häiriintyä, vaikka ajaisit autosi aivan niiden viereen. Tämä kuva on Keskisen Akin ottama Nrogongoron kraaterissa kesällä 2006. Ensin luulimme leijonaa kuolleeksi ja Aki oli hyppäämässä ulos autosta ottaakseen paremman kuva. Onneksi Daniel kuitenkin huomasi leijonan hengittävän ennen sitä.

During the time that Jason was visiting, he joined Daniel on a work-related down to Kilwa Masoko (smaal coastal town) to visit a pre-school. In Kilwa, they stayed at a beautiful beach bungalow resort called Kilwa Dreams. Considering the location, the service, food, facilities, etc. were quite impressive; especially, considering the fact that they were the only customers for the past 5 weeks.

Jasonin vierailun aikana hän matkusti Danielin seurana Kilwa Masokoon (pieni rannikkokaupunki) tutustumaan yhteen esikouluun. Kilwassa Daniel ja Jason olivat yötä Kilwa Dreams nimisessä rantamotellissa. Ottaen huomioon paikan sijainnin, palvelu, ruoka ja tilat olivat todella vakuuttavat. Etenkin, kun otti huomioon myös sen, että he olivat olleet ainoat asiakkaat viimeiseen 5 viikkoon.

During the past few weeks, we have had the opportunity of hosting a good family friend, Tuomas Anttila. Some of the highlight-moments of his trip were experienced while snorkeling in the waters of the Indian Ocean and visiting the Mikumi wildlife. However, the most precious moments were found in the long and deep discussions we had throughout the visit.

Hyvä perheystävämme Tuomas Anttila oli vieraanamme viimeiset pari viikkoa. Muutaman vierailun kohokohdat koettiin snorklatessa Intian Valtamerta ja tutustuessa Mikumin villieläimiin. Kuitenkin ehkä parhaat hetket koettiin pitkissä ja syvällisissä keskusteluissa, joita meillä oli koko loman ajan.

Last week, we got an opportunity to mix a little work with leisure when we travelled to the island of Zanzibar for a few days. In addition to work, we were able to visit some beautiful beaches and spend time with our good friends, the Kontsas Family. Benjy was able to catch up on playtime with his good friends, Gabriel and Romeo. Romeo was in such a hurry to be part of the “big boys crew” that he started walking at the age of 9 months!

Viime viikolla saimme mahdollisuuden yhdistää vähän lepoa ja työtä, kun matkustimme Zanzibarin saarelle. Työn lisäksi saimme levätä muutamalla paratiisirannalla ja viettää aikaa hyvin ystäviemme, Kontsasten kanssa. Benjykin sai päivittää kuulumisiaan hyvien kamujensa Gabrielin ja Romeon kanssa. Romeolla oli niin kova kiire päästä “isojen poikien” leikkeihin mukaan, että hän rupesi kävelemään jo 9 kuukauden ikäisenä!

Benjy News: Growth and development is rapid. Benjamin speaks words in English (bye bye, ball, hello, daddy, etc.), Finnish (äiti, mopo, kakka, pappa, etc.) and Swahili (mambo, poa, mama, baba, etc.) and is learning new words practically everyday. At the moment he has a bit of a fever, because of teething. Three of his molar teeth have come out. Also, he has found a new love, Fröbelin Palikat -music dvd. Autot vanhanaikaiset, Hippulat vinkumaan and Sutsisatsi are his favorites.

Benjy-uutiset: Kasvu ja kehitys on kovaa. Benjamin puhuu sanoja englanniksi (bye bye, ball, hello, daddy, etc.), suomeksi (äiti, mopo, kakka, pappa, etc.) ja swahiliksi (mambo, poa, mama, baba, etc.) ja oppii uusia sanoja liki joka päivä. Täälä hetkellä Benjyllä on vähän kuumetta, koska kolme hänen poskihammasta ovat puhjenneet samanaikaisesti. Hän on nyy löytänyt uuden rakkauden, Fröbelin Palikat -musiikkidvd. We have finally managed to find coffee, which competes with the Finnish roasts. The only problem is distance. The coffee shop which sells the coffee is located about 1000 kms north from where we are staying, on the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Their slogan captures Finnish mentality quite well: “There is no tomorrow without coffee”.

Olemme viimeinkin löytäneet kahvin, joka vetää vertoja suomalaiselle paahdolle. Ainoa ongelmamme on etäisyys. Kahvia myyvä kahvila sijaitsee noin 1000 km päässä kotoamme, Kilimanjaron vuoren juurella. Heidän mottonsa kiteyttää suomalaisen ajatusmaailman aika hyvin: “Ilman kahvia ei ole huomista”.
