Some days ago, Jason started a quiz on the Mikumi post comments. The question was how many elefants are there in the picture below. Some guesses and aswers were given, but not the correct one. The correct answer is six elefants. Here are the details.

Muutama päivä sitten Jason aloitti tietovisan Mikumin kuvien kommenteissa. Kysymys kuului, kuinka monta elefanttia on yllä olevassa kuvassa. Jonkun verran tuli arvauksia ja vastauksia, mutta ei ihan oikeaa vastausta. Oikea vastaus on kuusi elefanttia. Tässä tarkennukset kuvista.

Mummi and Pappa came to Dar for Christmas holidays. Benjamin has been on cloud nine with all the attention he has been receiving from the grandparents. Last Sunday, we visited the Amana Youth Centre located in Dar es Salaam. It is the first of Fida-supported youth centres and was established in 1996 with the help of Irma(-Mummi) and Kyösti(-Pappa).

Mummi ja Pappa tulivat Dariin joulunviettoon. Benjamin on ollut innoissaan kaikesta siitä huomiosta, mitä isovanhemmiltaan saa. Vierailimme viime sunnuntaina Amanan nuorisokeskuksessa. Amana on ensimmäinen Fidan tuella perustettu nuorisokeskus. Keskuksen toiminta alkoi Irman ja Kyöstin aloitteesta vuonna 1996.

Benjy has found new hobbies. The arcade corner at a local restaurant is the best. His feet might not reach the floor and the monitor is a bit high, but it doesn’t stop him from giving the other children a few lessons on how to play Super Mario.

Benjy on löytänyt uusia harrastuksia. Paikallisen ravintolan videopelinurkkaus on ihan paras. Muut lapset saavat kyllä Benjyltä oppitunnin siitä miten Super Mariota pelataan, vaikka jalat eivät maahan yllä ja monitorikin on hitusen korkealla.

During the past weeks we have had a number of celebrations. Last week, the Finnish community held a Christmas party at our compound. There were songs, the nativity play, “tiernapojat” and dancing. Notice that not all the “tiernapojat” are genuine “pojat”. Even Santa paid a visit. We sure felt bad about making him sweat in the sun with his thick coat and long beard while he gave out presents to the children. Temperature in Dar is currently around +35C and rising.

Viime viikojen aikana olomme täällä Darissa on ollut yhtä juhlaa. Viime viikolla juhlitiin joulua yhdessä muun Darin suomalaisen yhteisön kanssa. Oli laulua, joulukuvaelmaa, tiernapoikia ja tanssia. Huomaa, että kaikki tiernapojat eivät olletkaan aitoja poikia. Myös joulupukki piipahti käymään. Meidän kävi häntä vähän sääliksi, kun hän helteessä jakoi lapsille lahjoja paksu takki päällä ja pitkä parta naamalla. Darissa asteita on +35C ja nousemaan päin.

We were invited to attend the graduation ceremony of a local pre-school in Msanga as guests of honour. Msanga is located a few hours drive south from Dar es Salaam. We spent most of the day there and, as usual, Benjamin spent most of his time entertaining the local children.

Saimme kutsun kunniavieraiksi Msangan paikallisen esikoulun vamistujaisjuhlaan. Msanga sijaitsee parin tunnin ajomatkan päässä Darista etelään. Vietimme siellä aikalailla koko päivän, ja kuten yleensä, Benjamin vietti aikalailla kokopäivän kulkien sylistä syliin ja viihdyttäen paikallisia lapsia.

Daniel celebrated his birth in November. Finding the right ingredients to bake a cake in Africa is easier said than done. Also, in the beginning of December, we celebrated the Finnish Independance Day with the Ambassador and the Finnish community of Dar es Salaam.

Daniel juhli syntymäpäiviään marraskuussa. Kakunleivontatarpeiden löytäminen Afrikasta on helpommin sanottu kuin tehty. Hatunnosto siitä Sirkulle. Myöskin, joulukuun alussa saimme juhlia Suomen itsenäisyyspäivää yhdessä suurlähettilään ja muiden Darin suomalaisten kanssa.

Bathing time is always a big hassle, but at the end of the day its all worth it when you get a hug as a sign of appreciation for all your hard efforts.

Jokapäiväinen kylvetys on aina yhtä iso rumba, mutta illan päätteksi hali vaivanpalkaksi korvaa kyllä kaikki niin fyysiset kuin henkisetkin kärsimykset.

One of the downsides of parenthood is that you have to cut two sets of nails instead of one. One of the downsides of childhood is that you have to trust your clumbsy father with the cutting of the nails of your precious little fingers.
