An eventful three weeks has come to it’s end. We have just given Baba Mkubwa (Uncle Jason, “Big Daddy”) a ride to the airport and are feeling a bit sad and empty. During the past weeks, we were able to do and see a lot together- However, I believe Jason did the best job in summarizing the past weeks when he signed our guest book with the following words: “Family was best, Africa was only a bonus. (I didn’t get malaria)” (free translation) Here are still a few pictures from Jason’s vacation.

Kolmen viikon tapahtumarikas vierailu on lopussaan ja nyt aikea ja tyhjä olo kun ollaan juuri heitetty Baba Mkubwa (Jason-Setä) lentokentälle. Paljon saimme yhdessä tehdä ja nähdä, mutta kaiken kaikkiaan Jason taisi kiteyttää menneet viikot parhaiten vieraskirjaamme: “Perhe oli parasta, Afrikka vain bonusta. (Ei tullut malariaa)” (vapaa käännös) Tässä vielä vähän menneiden päivien kuvia.

Jason was able to spend some survivor-nostalgic time alone on the deserted island of Bongoyo and at the beach-side hotels of Dar es Salaam. In addition to this, he was also able to do a scuba dive to the depth of 12 meters in open water. He spent a total of 50 minutes down at the bottom, which is quite good, especially considering that it was his first dive and he only got a 30-minute training session before diving.

Jason sai viettää vähän robinson-nostalgista aikaa yksin Bongoyon autiolla saarella sekä Darin merenrantahotellien äärellä. Tämän lisäksi Jasonille avautui mahdollisuus laitesukellukseen 12 metrin syvyyteen avomerellä. Aikaa merenpohjassa kertyi kokonaiset 50 minuuttia, mikä on aika kiitettävä suoritus, ottaen huomioon, että kyseessä oli Jasonin ensimmäinen sukelluskerta ja hänellä oli pohjalla vain 30 minuutin treenit ennen sukellusta.

Though much time was spend traveling around the country, on safaris to the Mikumi National Park, field-trip to the village of Kilwa Masoko and the island of Zanzibar, we were also able to spent time chilling at our house. Most of Jason’s time went spending time with his family (read Benjamin), but he was also able to relax and catch up on the readings of his TACTful study groups. During the nights Daniel and Jason would battle each other for the prestigious title of East Africa AAM Champion.

Vaikka paljon aikaa meni matkustaessa safarilla Mikumin luonnonpuistossa, työmatkalla Kilwa Masokon rantakylässä ja Sansibarin saarella, oli meillä myäs mahdollisuus hengata ihan kotosallakin. Kotona suurin osa Jasonin ajasta meni seurustellessa perheen kanssa (lue Benjaminin), mutta hänellä tarjoutui myös mahdollisuuksia rauhoittua yksin kirjansa ääreen ja kauko-osallistua TACTful-piiriin lukemisiin. Öisin Daniel ja Jason taistelivat kunnioitetusta Itä-Afrikan AAM:n herruudesta.

Food and socializing went hand-in-hand. Jason was able to taste all sorts of fine exotic cuisines and dishes in the company of fellow wazungu, missionaries, local Tanzanians, etc. During one day, we were able to prepare a great seafood feast with a couple dozen of lobsters and crabs. The project Logistic Officer, Ellam Meshack, and Jason got along very well, and Ellam invited us all for a farewell feast at his house on Jason’s lsecond last day in the country.

Ruoka ja sosiaalinen kanssakäyminen kulkivat käsi kädessä koko loman ajan. Jason sai mahdollisuuden maistella kaikenlaisia erikoisia ja eksoottisia ruokalajikkeita kanssa-mzungujen, lähettien, paikallisten, ym. seurassa. Eräänä päivänä ostimme ja keitimme pari tusinaa hummeria ja taskurapua ja järjestimme kunnon rapukekkerit toiset Fidalaisten kanssa. Jason ja projektin logistiikkavastaava, Ellam Meshack, tulivat hyvin toimeen keskenään. Ellam kutsuikin meidät läksiäisjuhlaillalliselle hänen kotiinsa Jasonin toiseksi viimeisenä iltana.

Apparently water buffalo do not travel in large herds, at least not the size as zebras and wildebeest do. However, we were lucky enough to drive into a herd of hundred(s) in the middle of a forest road. The buffalo were Benjy’s absolutely favorite animal to watch. He jumped up, laughed and got excited (sometimes a bit afraid as well) whenever we saw them.

Kuulemma vesipuhvelit eivät mielellään liiku suurissa laumoissa, kuten seeprat ja gnut. Me olimme kuitenkin sen verran onnekkaita, että satuimme ajamaan keskelle satapäistä puhvelilaumaa keskellä metsäpolkua. Puhvelit olivatkin Benjyn ehdottomia lempieläimiä. Aina kun niihin törmäsimme Benjy hypähti, nauroi ja innoistui (joskus vähän myös pelkäsi).

The lions were evasive for most of the safari. However, towards the end of our day of driving, we saw a glimpse of one lion crossing the road. After following him some hundred yards, we came across ten lions feasting on a buffalo kill. The males were relaxing, females watching over their young and cubs were playing around, wrestling each other and feeding on the left-overs. Quite a sight.

Leijonat puhveli-aterialla

Leijonat olivat kiven alla suurimman osan reissustamme. Ekskursiomme loppupuolella kuitenkin bongasimme yksinäisen leijonan ylittämässä tietä. Seurasimme sitä muutaman sadan metrin verran joka johdatti meidät kymmenpäisen leijonalauman ja tuoreen puhvelisaaliin luokse. Urokset loikoilivat varjossa, naaraat katsoivat pieninten perään ja poikaset leikkivät, painivat toistensa kanssa ja söivät puhvelin jämiä.

Mikumi is known for having plenty of elefants. We were able to confirm this first hand. They are quite a magnificent sight. Their shere size is enough to frighten you, yet there is a gentleness about them that leaves you in awe. The whole herd was very protective of its young ones. We tried our best to keep appropriate distance. A Toyota Land Cruiser 4.2L is a big car, but a mere tin shell compared to these fellows.

Mikumi on tunnettu suuresta norsupopulaatiostaan. Tätä saimme olla paikan päällä todistamassa. Ne ovat aikamoinen näky. Silkka elefantin koko saa ihmisen takajaloilleen, mutta eläimellä on kuitenkin herkkä puolensakin, joka herättää ihailijassaan kunnioitusta ja ihmetystä. Koko lauma oli hyvin suojelevainen poikasiaan kohtaa. Me yritimme pitää etäisyytemme. Toyotan Land Cruiser 4.2L maasturi on iso auto, mutta vain peltipurkki näihin eläimiin verrattuna.

Dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant is quite an experience. The food is eaten around a small, round and low table and everyone eats from one big “plate” by hand. The food course is a variety of different kinds of sauces (meat and vegetable). Insera, a thin, rolled-up, bitter-like bread, is used for scooping the food. The dessert consists of a very dark roast blend of coffee and, believe it or not, popcorn. Interestingly, Ethiopia has been an independent country for thousands of years (atleast since written history).

Illallinen etiopialaisessa ravintolassa in mielenkiintoinen kokemus. Ruoka syödään pienen, pyöreän ja matalan pöydän ympärillä, yhdeltä isolta lautaselta ja käsin. Ruokalajikkeet ovat liha- ja vihanneskastikkeita, jotka ohuen ja happaman insera -leivän kera. Jälkiruoka koostuu tummapaahteisesta kahvista ja, uskokaa tai älkää, popkornista. Mielenkiintoista on myös, että Etiopia on ollut itsenäinen valtio tuhansien vuosien ajan (ainakin niin kauan kuin historiaa on kirjattu ylös).
