Getting used to living in Tanzania has been far easier than we anticipated! Time flyes so that it is difficult to remember when the last time was that we saw the snake living in our backyard. We are still living in other people’s houses as our house is being renovated. We are really looking forward to the day when we get to move in and start setting up our own home for the first time since last December.
Danny has had his second work trip. This time he was off to Tanga region where many of the pre-schools of our pre-school programme are situated. The locations of the pre-schools in small mountain villages are breathtaking. To many of them it is impossible to travel by car. Danny was amazed at the magnificent landscapes and the primitive mud huts. Sirkku and Benjy are accustomed to being home on their own and keep daddy’s travels in their evening prayers. The compound on which we live is known for its safety, so when Danny’s away Sirkku doesn’t feel the need to sleep with a knife under her pillow. Also the bars on the windows give comfort.
Dar es Salaam feels like our hometown already. We have found good shopping spots. Certain fruit merchants have become our friends and they give us a good price without too much haggling. We have also found a nice church. This church is in the premises of one of our Youth Centers and the Sunday meetings last only for three hours instead of the usual five. Our collegues and the church members have been great at welcoming us. They have done their share in helping us to settle down in our new home.
