It’s been raining a lot. For some reason, the rainy season has continued on for an extra month. We don’t mind because Africa needs the rain. Even with the rains its feels like were continuously sitting in a sauna.

Yesterday was an interesting day for us in Kariakoo, the notorious city center of Dar. We must have had prayers carrying us that day. Someone cut Daniel’s back pocket with a knife in an attempt to steal his wallet. Luckily, the thief failed the attempt. However, he did manage to cut through a nice pair of pants and boxer shorts and inflict a couple-centimeter-wide wound on Danny’s buttocks. It could have been worse. Now were just praying that the knife was clean. We even got a few prayers answered through that incident. We were accompanied by two representatives from World Challenge and at the time were presenting the challenges of youth ministry in Dar to them. This worked as a very practical example for the presentation. Also, Danny was able to find “genuine” Diesel-jeans from the same alley the incident took place for only 6000 shillings, which is about 4 euros. So, God managed to turn it into a victory.

The air cargo is still in the customs office and it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting it back any time soon. Apparently, there was some spelling mistake in the bill of lading. i.e. they’re just milking us for money. Well, they won’t be getting any, so we’ll just have to live off our suitcases for a bit longer. The only problem is that Benjy is running short of diapers (nappies for the English readers). Sirkku has found a nice gym across from where we live where she goes to a couple times a week. Last time she got an uninvited visitor when a monkey barged in to keep her company. The monkey was probably getting his buns tightened for the summer season. There have been many other animals around as well. We’ve found a snake crawling on the roof of our garage, a dozen geckos keep night-watch for us inside the house and tons of grass hoppers are dying to get into the house as well. The concerts they hold on the front yard lawn would definitely compete with Lordi.  

Paljon on satanut kun sadekausi on jostain syystä venynyt yli kuukaudella. Ihan hyvä vaan sillä Afrikka tarvii sadetta eikä lämmöstä ole kuitenkaan pulaa ollut. Kunnon saunaefekti käynnissä koko ajan.

Eilen oli mielenkiintoinen päivä Kariakoossa, Darin pahamaineisessa keskustassa. Taisi olla rukouksia matkassa mukana. Dannyltä viillettiin puukolla takatasku auki kun joku havitteli sen lompakkoa. Onneksi ei kuitenkaan sitä saanut. Meni vaan hyvät housut ja boxerit ja tuli parin sentin haava pakaraan. Olisi kai pahemminkin voinut käydä. Nyt rukoillaan että puukko oli ainakin suht’ puhdas. Rukousvastauksia tapauksesta kuitenkin löytyi. Oltiin muutaman World Challenge -edustajan kanssa näyttämässä heille Darin nuorten ongelmakohtia ja meidän ministryä vastauksena niihin. Ongelmakohdat tuli sitten konkretisoitua oikein kunnolla! Myöskin samalta kujalta jossa kaveri viilteli, Danny löysi upouudet “aidot” Dieselin farkut vain 6 000 shillingillä, eli 4 euroa. Joten, Jumala pelasi homman kotiin.

Lentorahti on vielä tullissa eikä ainakaan vähään aikaan olla sitä saamassa. Kuulemma joku kirjoitusvirhe rahtikirjassa, eli lypsävät vain rahaa. Sitä ei ole kuitenkaan herumassa, joten täytyy vain elellä matkalaukusta vielä jonkin aikaa. Benjyllä vaan on vaipat todella vähissä. Sirkku on löytänyt kuntosalin suoraan Onnelaa vastapäätä jossa hän käy pari kertaa viikossa.  Muutama päivä sitten paikallinen punapersepaviaani-apina tunkeutui saliin Sirkun seuraksi. Taisi olla apina pakaralihaksia treenauttamassa kesää varten. Elämiä on muutenkin paljon ympäristössä. Käärme löytyi luikertelemassa autotallin katolla, tusinan verran gekkoja pitää meille yövahtia talossa ja heinäsirkoilla olisi kova hinku päästä sisälle niiden seuraksi. Sirkkojen yölliset konsertit varmasti pistävät vertoja Lordille.

We arrived in the country about a week ago and are well on our way of settling down. Trying to give an explanation of what Tanzania appears to be is quite difficult. The rich are rich and the poor are truly poor. I have not being able to locate a clear middle-class yet. The climate is hot and humid (even though we’re living through the coldest time of the year), lots of smily faces, lots of noises, lots of scents and smells, lots of colours. Its amazing how bad of a condition the roads are here. I’d imagine it would be easier for me to drive through my Grandpa’s old fields than to the parking lots of the local market places.

The orienatation for work has begun a good pace. We have managed to go through much, but so much more is yet to be learned. We have not had the time to begin our language studies yet, but hopefully we’ll find time after the orientation phase. Soon, we’ll be doing some travelling as we hit the field to visit some local project workers, a few pre-schools and youth centres and one teacher training college. At the moment, the locations to visit during the next few weeks are Mwanza, Shinyanga, Shinkida, Korokwe and Zanzibar Island. We attend the Dar es Salaam City Church which is gathers in the Amana youth centre. There, the meetings are held in two languages and, as is customary, the people are very friendly.

After a little difficulty in the beginning, Benjamin has managed to cope with the local climate. The airconditioned roomes help his sleeping. Sirkku has had a very nostalgic time here in Dar and has already managed to locate the best places for food shopping. Yesterday, she accidentally met her old school-mate, Aisha. Retrieving our air cargo has proven to be quite challenging. Here, bureacracy and corruption walk hand-in-hand. Hopefully, we’ll get the cargo soon, because we’re already running low on clothes, diapers and other stuff. As soon as we settle in a little more we’ll try to hook up Skype and Messenger. The internet works here, from time to time, but not very fast. Have a blessed summer!

Tulimme maahan noin viikko sitten ja sopeutuminen on lähtenyt hyvin käyntiin. Vaikea kuvailla minkälainen maa tämä Tansania on. Rikkaat ovat rikkaita ja köyhät todellakin köyhiä. Keskiluokkaa en ainakaan vielä ole oikein havainnut. Todella kuuma ja kostea ilmasto (vaikka elämmekin vuoden kylmintä aikaa!), paljon hymyileviä ihmisiä, paljon ääniä, paljon tuoksuja ja hajuja, paljon värejä. Tiet ovat hämmästyttävän huonossa kunnossa. Helpompaa olisi ajaa Vaarin peltojen poikki kuin esimerkiksi paikallisten ostareiden parkkipaikoille.

Työhön perehdyttäminen on hyvässä vauhdissa. Paljon on käyty läpi, mutta huomattavasti enemmän on vielä opittavaakin. Kielen opiskelua emme ole vielä ehtineet aloittaa, mutta toivottavasti sitten kun perehdytys vähän hellittää. Pian pitää lähteä myös muutamalla kenttämatkalle tutustumaan paikallisiin projektityöntekijöihin, muutamaan esikouluun ja nuorisokeskukseen ja yhteen opettajakoulutuslaitokseen. Tällä hetkellä seuraavien viikkojen matkustuskohteet ovat ainakin Mwanza, Shinyanga, Shinkida, Korokwe ja Zanzibar. Paikallisseurakunnan olemme löytäneet Dar es Salaamin nuorisokeskuksen (Amana Vijana Centre) yhteydestä, Dar es Salaam City Churchista. Siellä kokoukset ovat kaksikielisiä ja paikalliseen tapaan ihmiset ovat hyvin ystävällisiä.

Benjamin on pienten alkuvaikeuksien jälkeen tottumassa paikalliseen ilmastoon. Ilmastoidut huoneet helpottavat yöunia. Sirkulla on ollut oikein nostaligista aikaa täällä Darissa ja on jo löytänyt lähialueen parhaat ruuanhankitapaikat. Eilen Sirkku tapasi sattumalta vanhan koulunkaverinsa, Aishan. Lentorahtin saamisessa on ollut ongelmia eikä lähitulevaisuuskaan näytä kovin lupaavalta. Täällä byrokratia ja korruptio kulkevat hyvin käsi kädessä. Toivottavasti rahti saadan pian, sillä vaatteet, vaipat ja muu krääsä on aika vähissä. Kun tästä vielä vähän enemmän kotiudutaan yritetään myös pistää Skype ja Messenger pystyyn. Netti toimii aika-ajoin, mutta ei kovin nopeasti. Siunausta kesään!
